mary poppins’ mojo

I often coach clients that are trying to reach a dream or goal that they've set for themselves. A typical outcome from our conversations is that they identify a few steps (or even just a single step) that will move them closer to their goals.  Pretty simple, right?

Well, I've got a little confession to make. I've been trying to start a blog for the last five years. Every time I've tried to start, I've come up with a million reasons to put it off.  "Who would want to hear what I have to say?" "I've got too much on my to-do list." "I'm tired. Maybe some self-care is a better idea." You get the picture...

Today, I got some coaching from an incredible woman named Patricia. (You know who you are. THANK YOU for sharing your time and talent with me!) By the end of our conversation, I had committed to writing my first blog post - with a promise to share it with her tomorrow morning. Yet, when I sat down to write, my mind went blank and once again, I walked away from my computer.

About an hour later, it hit me. Wisdom from the Wonderful World of Disney.  In the movie, Mary Poppins, the "practically perfect" protagonist helps Jane and Michael (the children in her care) to clean their nursery by teaching them that "Well begun is half done." This quote, which was originally attributed to Aristotle, is a great reminder that simply beginning is half the job.  Once we overcome the inertia of inaction, the task at hand becomes much easier.

So, I thought, "What better way to start a blog than blogging about starting?"

What do you most want to start? The next time you find yourself coming up with your own "million reasons not to," listen closely. Perhaps, you too, will hear Miss Mary's words ringing in your ear... "Well begun is half done!"

Here's to YOUR mojo...
